Sunglasses in the Dark: Gao Yingpu

6 March - 5 April 2021
In the urban life under the social media matrix, highly symbolic objects or phenomena are grouped into seemingly story-like plots, and special objects or events reflect a group spirit portrait of particular reference. In the fiction of the desire for identity, the object becomes a real fragment between the statement of reality and the spiritual portrait. The digital watch, manicure, Marlboro, Zhongnanhai, sunglasses, Snickers, etc., which appear repeatedly in the painting, intentionally or unintentionally, evoke a kind of identity in the viewer's mind.

Most of my information comes from social media, and my drawings, like advertising slogans, are my independent statements of current objects and phenomena. There is a deductive element to the authenticity of information and images, which is irreversible. And. In the process of information reading, it is also a common phenomenon to inadvertently or deliberately ignore some people and things. However, if the information group image is removed from the landscape, it is undeniable that the feeling of the event that remains after this is real. The real inner and deductive group image are replaced at this moment. The shape of the object with the nature of slogan is condensed, which can more quickly point to a certain type of event and accommodating spiritual field. In the process of painting, the recombination of objects and phenomena, as well as the addition of different scenes, can give these objects more different meanings correspondingly. It seems that the deep expression is repeatedly opened, or true or mocking, which often causes people to have a sense of emptiness suddenly lost in the process of painting. I think it's about responding to advertising in a way that's close to advertising nature, and making the most of it.

With the changing value of the environment, like wearing sunglasses at night, the functionality of the sunglasses itself is reduced and decoration becomes the main purpose. On the other hand, young people with bright clothes are likely to go to clubs with sunglasses on. Such objects point to certain groups of people, and the object remains the same. The change of the place will have new meanings and clearly indicate the desire of identity. But it's not a serious thing. I'm more concerned with the perception of the current phenomenon as it happens.
