Hidden Box: Zhai Yi

7 - 31 March 2020
From the end of Jihai to the early spring of Gengzi, I have been confined at home for more than 40 days. As a resident of a city in an epidemic area, I should stay for a while longer. Fortunately, I am a person who doesn't like to go out, so it won't be too uncomfortable to retreat to the house for a few days. During this period of time, I read a total of two books, "Walking to the Water Poor" by Ban Zonghua and "Flying West at Night" by Burrell Markham. I regret not bringing more books home; and then I kept practicing Zhao Mengfu's running script "Ode to the Former Chibi"; due to the limitation of materials at home, I occasionally drew two strokes; finally, I kept swiping my phone anxiously, hoping to salvage some good news from the flood of information.

In the turmoil of the entire epidemic, it seems that doing anything is like throwing small stones into it, which can't stir up any splashes, but you have to keep throwing it, and finally wait for it to calm down. Like everyone else, I was throwing and waiting, from winter to spring, hoping that things would get better soon. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the opening of my first solo exhibition. Fortunately, with the help of the gallery and friends, the exhibition can still run normally.

A few days ago, a friend joked that the work "Common Fate" is like a prophecy of the plague. In fact, this work is based on the common life bird in the Buddhist story. The blue on the left symbolizes poison, and the moon on the right It symbolizes the swallowed flowers in the story. Stories are always fascinating. Rather than speaking of prophecy, it is better to say that the fate of human beings is always transpiring and reappearing in such tides.
The creation of the paper box series originally originated from my viewing experience in the art gallery. We will enter a man-made display space during the viewing process. In order to better display the works, the overall space of the art gallery will be redesigned Separated, the surrounding works and space together form a new whole. We are in such a separated space, receiving the information conveyed by artworks and space, just like being in a maze.

Based on this, I started to build my own "space", filling the walls of the "space" with fragments of graffiti that I wanted to express, and then connecting the fragments with the three-dimensional image of the box to unify them into a new whole. I processed the box into a "paper" texture, hoping that its shape can give people a better feeling of disassembly, kneading, folding and destruction. It is not permanent and immutable, but temporary, fragile and moldable of. The viewer observes the "space" as a whole from a distant perspective of God, instead of focusing on only one of the images, adding another level to the behavior of "seeing". As the main organ of "seeing", the eyes are in a very obvious position in many pictures. The eyes are the window to know everything and understand everything. If you can't see it, you are ignorant.

Even though most of the time, the pebbles we throw may not have any effect, but we have to see, see the huge wave and the countless splashes it splashes.
